Born in Fulham, southwest London, Andy Hamilton was educated at Westminster City School and later read English at Downing College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the Cambridge University Light Entertainment Society (CULES).

Hamilton first came to the attention of British audiences when performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in the 1970s, paying the bills during this early career in comedy by undertaking roles at Harrods and the Post Office before joining the BBC in 1976.

Working predominantly on BBC Radio 4, Hamilton wrote for shows including THe Jason Explanation, Week Ending, The News Huddlines and The Million Pound Radio Show.

In the late 70s, he wrote on such shows as Not The Nine O'Clock News, The Dawson Watch, and Scotch And Wry. As his star continued to rise, throughout the 80s he wrote and produced four series of Who Dares Wins..., and also wrote on The Kit Curran Radio Show.

Moving into the 90s, Hamilton was a regular guest on BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz, and both wrote and produced the successful TV show Drop The Dead Donkey.

From 1995 to 2012 Hamilton wrote and directed Old Harry's Game, a hugely successful radio comedy set mainly in Hell in which Hamilton plays the cynical, world-weary Satan. Four series of six half-hour episode each are aired by 2001, with further series broadcast in 2005, 2007, and 2009. Many of the notable cast members, including Andy Hamilton, David Swift, David Grout, and Robert Duncan, had all worked together previously on Drop The Dead Donkey.

Hamilton is frequently invited as a guest panellist on I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, and is the voice of Dr Elephant, the dentist in the children's show Peppa Pig.

In 2007 he co-created (with Andy Jenkin), wrote, directed, and produced the long-running and partially improvised BBC sitcom Outnumbered, about a middle-class family with three children. The adult actors learn the scripts, while the children are given last-minute instructions by the writers. It would run for five series, ending in 2014, with a Christmas special in 2016.

In 2014 Hamilton co-wrote, with Andy Jenkin, a classic British comedy film entitled What We Did On Our Holiday. With a stellar cast including Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, and Annette Crosbie, it centres on the struggles of a family to hold itself together amid the pressures of parenthood.

Hamilton married Libby Asher in 1998 and they have three children together.
