Series S - VG: Part II

Another selection of the best moments from the recent series. Sandi Toksvig asks questions connected to the letter S, as Alan Davies and the guest panellists try to come up with interesting, point-worthy answers - all the while avoiding the most obvious ones.

Topics

- 'S' Animals Best Bit Tangent: The Chihuahuan hook-nosed snake.

- Season's Greetings Best Bit Tangent: The origins of slapstick and "stealing your thunder".

- Smörgåsbord Best Bit Tangent: Acting out emotions without using words.

- 'S' Animals New Material Tangent: Josh Widdicombe had so many snails in his garden last summer that his gardener turned up and put down an organic material that makes snails burrow underground when they eat it. Jamali Maddix asks why he didn't use salt, but given that Josh appears to be middle class enough to employ a gardener he would have to apply the salt via a grinder or sprinkle pinches of it by hand.

- Season's Greetings Best Bit: How to make Brussels sprouts bearable.

- Sexed-Up Best Bit Tangent: Gendered languages.

- Saints & Sinners Best Bit: Bawdy pilgrimages souvenirs.

- Season's Greetings New Material: The music and lyrics to "Silent Night" were written in 1818 in Oberndorf, near Salzburg, by Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber. In 1912, a sculpture was made of them, but lyricist Mohr never wanted a portrait of him done, so no-one knew what he looked like. Thus, the artwork of him is based on his skull. Mohr had been dead for 60 years. Joe Lycett says that artwork looks like Victor Meldrew being bummed by a guitarist.

- Sexed-Up Best Bit Tangent: The shrink wrap effect.

- Silly Season Best Bit Tangent: Odd newspaper headlines.

- Sun, Sea & Sandi Best Bit Tangent: The man who lives in a sand castle.

- Season's Greetings Best Bit Tangent: Sally Phillips on being the voice of Canesten thrush cream.

- 'S' Animals Best Bit Tangent: How Jamali briefly owned a stolen dog as a child.

- Smörgåsbord Best Bit Tangent: Audio description for visually impaired viewers.

- Sexed-Up Best Bit: Monarchs consummating their marriages in front of an audience.

- Saints & Sinners Best Bit: Sex with sloths.

- Silly Season Best Bit: The most popular Volkswagen.

- Season's Greetings Best Bit Tangent: Lighting a candle using smoke.

- 'S' Animals Best Bit: The shape of honeycombs.

- Smörgåsbord Best Bit: Suffrajitsu.

- Saints & Sinners Best Bit Tangent: "Susto", a folk illness where people think their soul has left them but they are still alive.
