Radio Times review

The last time Cameron Diaz was on The Graham Norton Show he slightly lost his grip. Give Diaz an inch and she'll launch into one of her daffy monologues about dating or - as happened last time - what you might describe as women's personal grooming.

On that occasion she had Richard Ayoade quietly dying next to her; this time Ricky Gervais and Ben Stiller will be on hand, partly to publicise their latest Night at the Museum movie and partly to keep La Diaz in check. Her co-star in the Annie remake, Jamie Foxx, is also squeezing onto the sofa, as is EastEnders' Danny Dyer and Australian comic actress Rebel Wilson. It's quite a line-up.

David Butcher, Radio Times, 19th December 2014

Radio Times review

A peach of a series finale, running in real time with Lee Mack in his favourite spot at the bar throughout. Lucy (Sally Bretton) is on her way to a restaurant for a job interview, and if she gets the role she'll be leaving for good. So Lee and Toby (Hugh Dennis) ponder life for Lee without Lucy. Should he run next door and hammer on the window, like Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate? Can he even admit he loves her?

The show's detractors say it's just a heap of puns with no soul. Not tonight. The underlying theme of the lackadaisical joker using silliness as a defence mechanism is blown open. Yet the gags - and there are many brilliant ones - never, ever stop.

Jack Seale, Radio Times, 19th December 2014

Radio Times review

As you would expect, Stephen Fry inhabits a different world from ordinary folk. So when Alan Davies tells him a preposterous nickname for the staff at Argos, he believes him. Let's assume he doesn't shop there. He's equally naive when it's suggested that the Earl of Sandwich is now appearing on Gogglebox. "Is he?" he asks politely and only slightly incredulously.

Among the musings on love handles, peshwari naans and composers, Fry's hilarious demonstration of how to make a lava lamp reminds David Mitchell of dreadful chemistry lessons. "Sir! I did what Alan said to do," he whines, waving his hand in the air. "And now I'm scared!"

Ken Dodd interview

While Dodd's type of traditional music-hall act may seem dated to some modern audiences, he still has legions of admirers. He said: "A variety show is the best type of performance you can see. You get to see a range of different skills performed by people who have spent a lifetime perfecting their craft."

Viz's Roger Mellie: man from the telly's Xmas viewing

Christmas telly these days isn't a patch on what it used to be. Those great stars of yesteryear - the family entertainers who kept us glued to our sets for hours each night back in the seventies - are now no longer on our screens. Sadly, many have passed on to that great BBC canteen in the sky, whilst even more of them are banged up in prison or under investigation for historic sex offences. Even so, there are still plenty of great programmes on to keep us watching over the festive season.

How to remember Rik Mayall

The death of Rik Mayall in June 2014 quite rightly made the front page of every newspaper. There is no one better than the BBC to make a warm and loving tribute to a comedy hero.
