DVD review: Miranda Hart, My What I Call Live Show

A live comedy DVD which starts with an aerial shot of London's O2 Arena, while - without irony - S Club 7's saccharine turd Reach For The Stars belts out has already started off on shaky ground, to be honest. What is this nightmare? Well, it's Miranda Hart, and her, what she calls, live show. And it's a good job she's made clear from the outset that this is what she calls a live show, because it would struggle to pass for such a thing by anyone else's standards.

DVD review: Nina Conti, Dolly Mixtures

Edgy and delirious, the Conti spews anxious, razor-sharp madness with laser-like focus; each character is a fun-house mirror held up to its master, with hilarious and ever-inventive consequences.

Sarah Millican: Where are all the female comedians?

"I've sat next to women in restaurants and cinemas, but never at work"

Sarah Millican, Radio Times, 13th November 2014

Radio Times review

When the pilot for this police satire aired, it felt perfectly poised between farce and drama. Or maybe imperfectly: there were plenty of absurd moments and funny lines (its creators worked on The Thick of It), but also a thriller edge to proceedings. An action satire? A jet-black dramedy? Kafka meets The Bill?

As we start the full series, the tone feels clearer. The dialogue is still razor sharp - "I sleep like a cokey meerkat on an electric fence. That's me relaxing," snaps James Nesbitt's commissioner - but actual gags are rationed. We're more focused on the political minefield of policing London, and the PR machine - headed by Brit Marling's spin chief - that steers through it.

Their main problem here is a youth prison riot where private contractors running the unit have been overrun. The good news? "Joey Barton's said on Twitter he's willing to be an intermediary..."

Radio Times review

This is a joy. Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine's follow-up to their BBC Four hospital comedy Getting On centres on a dog-training class in the Wirral. Scanlan plays power-tripping dog-handler Nana V with the company slogan "For all your dogging needs". She takes a shine to widower Alexander (Tobias Menzies) whose fluffy king poo is a "muck muncher". Her rival for his attentions is Naomi (Pepperdine), a harassed charity worker with an uncontrollable lab and a wayward teenage daughter.

A gentle comedy with superb character studies and several laugh-out-loud moments.

Patrick Mulkern, Radio Times, 13th November 2014

Radio Times review

There is a case to be made for killing every critic on Earth. Monty Python, the men who invented proper comedy, reunited for a live show at the O2 and we drowned it in snotty articles. Are they too old? Are they still funny? We were so busy trying to find a clever angle we forgot to laugh.

This documentary is a chance to relive the historic moment, divorced from the hype. Combining behind-the-scenes footage with a history of the troupe, it's a surprisingly frank affair, particularly on the money issues that dragged the Pythons on stage.

Actually, you could write an interesting article about how Python rebelled against the traditional class system only to fall prey to modern ultra-capitalism. Oh God. Please, someone stop me.

Lee Mack review

I loved this show and have never laughed so much, leaving the Edinburgh Playhouse on a high and with one certain thought in my mind - that I will certainly return to see Lee Mack next time he graces us with his presence in Edinburgh. Good luck with the rest of the tour.

Review: Mark Watson at the Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple

The show, named "Flaws", was dedicated to the flaws and misdemeanours of humankind and, more to the point, Watson himself. Swearing at rogue coins in the Post Office and arguing with the self-service "bagging area" were just light glimpses into what was to become a dark comedy. Mark Watson has hit a wall.

Jake Yapp: The Agony of a Misfired Joke

I didn't sign the letter (I wasn't asked to either, mind you, I mean, I don't want to go making assumptions or anything) but if I had been asked, I don't know if I would have signed it. I am not quite so eager to cast the first stone. I can't pretend I have never made an error of judgement.

Jake Yapp, The Huffington Post, 13th November 2014

The real reason ITV2 gave Dapper Laughs a series?

Celebrity Juice is a massive vehicle for ITV2. It's the most watched show they've ever broadcast - drawing in over 2 million viewers for a single episode at its peak. They do not want to piss off anyone involved in that. Not the people who devised the show, but particularly not producer/creator Dan Baldwin.
