Series 3

1. The Armoured Might Of Lance Corporal Jones

First broadcast: Thursday 11th September 1969

Walker suggests to Jones that he should loan the platoon his butchers' van, so that he can get free petrol for it. However, Mainwaring is ordered to have the vehicle converted to run on gas, causing more than a few problems and thwarting Walker's plan!


2. Battle School

First broadcast: Thursday 18th September 1969

The Walmington-on-Sea platoon are going to a training camp. But after the platoon get lost on the way and arrive late, the men begin to lose faith in Captain Mainwaring.


3. The Lion Has 'Phones

First broadcast: Thursday 25th September 1969

Mainwaring tries to improve communications amongst the platoon by giving lessons in using public telephone boxes. Their lessons are needed when a German plane crash lands into the local reservoir.


4. The Bullet Is Not For Firing

First broadcast: Thursday 2nd October 1969

The platoon get into a spot of bother after firing at a German plane during an air raid. Displeased at the spending of precious bullets, Mainwaring organises a court of inquiry into the situation.


5. Something Nasty In The Vault

First broadcast: Thursday 9th October 1969

During an air-raid, the bank is hit by a bomb. The good news is that the bomb has not blown up. The bad news is reason why it has not: Mainwaring and Wilson are holding it!


6. Room At The Bottom

First broadcast: Thursday 16th October 1969

Mainwaring is shocked to learn that he is not a captain but a lieutenant. Things get even worse when he learns later on that he has no rank at all, and ends up as a private.


7. Big Guns

First broadcast: Thursday 23rd October 1969

The platoon are given some extra fire power when they get a large naval gun. Now it is just a matter of learning how to fire it, and removing anything that can be used as cover by the Germans.


8. The Day The Balloon Went Up

First broadcast: Thursday 30th October 1969

The platoon discover a runaway barrage balloon and decide to release it safely themselves. This proves not to be wise, when the balloon flies away with Captain Mainwaring still hanging onto it.


9. War Dance

First broadcast: Thursday 6th November 1969

Captain Mainwaring organises a dance event in order to improve relations between members of the platoon. However, the event is likely to be spoilt with Pike's plan to announce a surprise engagement.


10. Menace From The Deep

First broadcast: Thursday 13th November 1969

The platoon go on guard duty at the end of Walmington's pier. The situation's bad enough after Pike incorrectly ties up the boat and loses their food, but things get worse when Jones spots a mine under the pier!


11. Branded

First broadcast: Thursday 20th November 1969

Godfrey finds himself a victim of ridicule after he tells Captain Mainwaring that during the Great War he was a conscientious objector.


12. Man Hunt

First broadcast: Thursday 27th November 1969

After a memo warns the platoon to look out for parachutes, Walker admits to discovering one in the woods some weeks ago. Mainwaring's keen to identify whether the material was British or German, but that's not so easy as it was turned into several dozen pairs of ladies' knickers!


13. No Spring For Frazer

First broadcast: Thursday 4th December 1969

When Frazer discovers that the butterfly spring for his Lewis gun has vanished, the platoon must face up to the reality of defending the coast without a machine gun. Unless they can find the piece, that is. Unfortunately, it could very well be inside a coffin - and not unaccompanied!


14. Sons Of The Sea

First broadcast: Thursday 11th December 1969

Mainwaring gets his hand on a boat and plans to set up river patrols. A practice run ends disastrously when the platoon get lost in fog and end up at sea. They can't really have drifted all of the way to Nazi-occupied France, can they?


Short Insert: Resisting The Aggressor Down The Ages

First broadcast: Thursday 25th December 1969

The Home Guard begin rehearsing their performance for the town pageant. A propaganda piece to inspire the locals, it tells of Britain's many oppressors down the ages. However, they are rudely interrupted by an air raid.
