I didn't watch Outnumbered, but I thought a lot of it was improvised?

Supposedly so, yes. I believe what that actually means is that they're given a relatively detailed (considering the 'improvised' label) run-down of each scene, some key lines they have to deliver, and are left to fill in the gaps with the inconsequential banter. So still pretty scripted on the whole.

(This is where someone points out that the opposite has been said in an article or interview on this very site somewhere. Heh.)
