Film review - David Brent: Life on the Road

The mockumentary conceit isn't consistent and the sentimentality of the band's final performance feels contrived, but it's nice to have some sweetness to cut through the film's acidic brand of humour.

The Yorkshire Post, 18th August 2016

David Brent - Life on the Road reviewed

Some comedies should never be resurrected - this is one of them. There are a few decent jokes and some of the bad songs are really good bad songs but there's no ensemble effort and the redemption is cynically achieved.

Review: Fleabag, BBC Three, episode 5

It has taken me a while to get round to writing about the fifth episode of Fleabag. I don't know what the journalistic equivalent of being speechless is but that's how I felt after watching it. It's not quite the same as writer's block, it's just when you see something that is so visceral and powerful on a gut level as this it is hard to find the right way of expressing your response to it.

Ten must see Edinburgh Fringe shows I still need to see

It must be a good Fringe, we are halfway through and my list of must-see shows is now longer than it was when I arrived. Here's a run down of shows I'm still determined to find the time to see. In, I should add, no particular order.

You'll never guess who was at the show last night...

So, have you been doing any celebrity spotting while wandering around the Festival this year? Trying your best to look all nonchalant as you realise there's a star standing in front of you in the queue for the Cow, or busy entertaining the table next to your's in the Courtyard, or possibly sitting in the front row expecting to be entertained by your show. After comedian Jarleth Regan told us his 'Paxman story', we asked him to go and find some similar tales of mid-show celebrity encounters from other Fringe performers...

Egg says of this year's darkly humorous offering: "I suppose the show can be looked at as an extended metaphor about divergent thinking - an instructional inspirational piece of theatre about how we can all expand our horizons if we look beyond them and strive to be creative and inventive."

Mary Palmer, Daily Record, 18th August 2016

Helen Monks takes the Fringe route to world domination

The story of how Helen Monks ended up playing a fictional version of a teenage Caitlin Moran in TV sitcom Raised By Wolves is pretty well known by now. It's the one about how student fan-girl Monks went to a book-signing by the best selling author of How To Be A Woman, whose journalistic career began aged sixteen after winning a newspaper competition. During the event Moran let slip that she was writing a semi autobiographical show with her sister Caroline, and when she went up to get her book signed, Monks suggested that she could play her.
