Emma Sidi: 10 Edinburgh Fringe questions

Emma Sidi

Emma Sidi answers 10 questions about her 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show.

Give us a quick overview of your comedy career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

This is my second Edinburgh solo show (I did another Edinburgh in 2013 with my university sketch troupe, the classic boozy Fringe education) and it's great to come back with a bit of wisdom from last year. A bit. I can't stress the 'a bit' bit enough.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself.

1. I've got two brothers.
2. I've got three brothers.
3. I live inside a working primary school. Children scream as I wake.

Describe your new show in exactly 23 words.

Think Spanish. Think Mexico. Think soap opera. Think EastEnders. Think Manchester. Think Europe. Think DNA tests. Think football. Think Bacofoil. Got it? Good.

Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Pretend they've dropped a gold ring on the floor then let them know if they want it back they've got to come to the show. An old trick working use by savvy scammers worldwide.

What's your plan for trying to eat - and drink - healthily during the Fringe?

I'm going to be more boring than even I thought possible and have an alcohol-free month. I wish I was joking, but my voice just ain't up to it otherwise. I'm also eating healthily but with regular Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to at least retain one vice.

What will you miss most while you're away from home?

My electric toothbrush. I wanted to pack light so didn't bring it. Seeing as I brought five pairs of shoes, that makes no sense. I'm a manual-toothbrush-using fool.

Aside from performing, what else are you looking forward to doing in Scotland's fine capital?

Going to the various fast food places I only get to savour one month per year (let me hear you say Red Box! "ugh do we have to? Fine, okay...Red Box") and using my Pleasance Pass to catch the best stuff of the Fringe. It's a huge treat.

If you took over programming a Fringe venue, what would your perfect line-up of comedians be?

Oh God, great! Okay: make everybody fall in love with Mae Martin, then vintage madness with Lazy Susan, hilarious spooky comedy from Cheekykita, James Acaster because the poor guy can't get a gig anywhere, Lolly Adefope for unique character stand-up, Birthday Girls to get the party started with such great sketch comedy, Ahir Shah to remind us that Brexit means much more than Brexit, and Phil Dunning, the People's Prince because...just see the show. Please.

Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Gengis Khan. I'd be like: 'Why. Are. You. Here, mate?!" and then would need a really long nap, potentially sleeping past my alarm and missing my show.

Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,800+ other Fringe offerings listed on BCG this year?

Imagine being able to speak Spanish for one hour of your life? This is how this show will make you feel. And if you already speak Spanish, even better, babe - you finally get a chance to prove to everyone how great you are because you speak Spanish.

'Emma Sidi: Telenovela' is at Pleasance Courtyard at 8:15pm on 3-16, 18-28 Aug. Listing
