By placing itself in some antediluvian epoch, The Smoking Room comes across as a period piece, albeit one without charm. In order to resonate the modern world, the cast should have been made to stand in the street shivering as they partook of their forbidden pleasure, their antisocial tics caught by a shaking, hand-held camera. This is, after all, what real people have to do.
