  • Six part Sky comedy series Romantic Getaway will star Katherine Ryan and Romesh Ranganathan
  • The duo play Allison and Deacon, a couple desperate for a baby who 'borrow' £50k they need to fund IVF from their boss
  • However, when Deacon adds an extra zero to the transfer, they end up stealing half a million pounds

Sky has confirmed it has commissioned Romantic Getaway, a sitcom series starring Katherine Ryan and Romesh Ranganathan.

British Comedy Guide revealed news of the project in March, however the broadcaster has now confirmed further plot details.

Sky explains: "Allison (Katherine Ryan) and Deacon (Romesh Ranganathan) are desperate for a baby, but they've run out of money to fund any more IVF treatment. So they decide to 'borrow' the £50k they need from their filthy rich boss Alfie, who they discover is illegally creaming off money from the company. And it works! Except that, on a whim, Deacon secretly adds an extra nought to the transfer, and actually steals half a million quid. Also, Allison is secretly starting to doubt whether she wants a baby after all.

"Their web of lies kicks off a downward spiral into the criminal underworld of suburban Britain, and pushes them, and their plans for their future together, to the limit."

The six episode series is described as a "modern Bonnie and Clyde story mixing classic romantic comedy moments with high octane, thrilling set-pieces".

It is produced by Sky Studios and Ranga Bee, the production company run by Ranganathan and Ben Green. The duo have written the episodes, with Shaun Wilson directing and Caroline Norris producing.

Ranganathan previously made a 2015 BBC short, Rom-Com, in which he starred alongside Aisling Bea, with the pair playing a couple on their first date.

The comedian is also set to star in BBC One sitcom Avoidance soon, in which he plays a confrontation-shy father kicked out of the house by his partner (Jessica Knappett).

Ranganathan has an established relationship with Sky. The comic has made two series of his semi-autobiographical sitcom The Reluctant Landlord with the broadcaster, as well as Romesh Presents, the 2019 shorts showcase of upcoming comedians, plus regular appearances on sports panel show A League Of Their Own, which he now hosts.

Rob And Romesh Vs, his challenge series with Rob Beckett in which they try their hands at various sports and performing arts, is currently on air for its fourth series.

Meanwhile, Romantic Getaway is Ryan's first acting role since Sky's 2020 dramatisation of the first meeting between Joan Rivers and Barbra Streisand in the Urban Myth short When Joan Kissed Barbra, which followed soon after the comedian's own comedy drama on Netflix, The Duchess.

Romantic Getaway is one of a number of Sky shows announced or confirmed today. Rosie Molloy Gives Up Everything, a series starring Sheridan Smith, and festive special Christmas Carole were amongst the other titles.
