Code 404. DI John Major (Daniel Mays)
Detective John Major is killed after a failed sting operation, but the Met brings him back from the dead as part of an experimental artificial intelligence project. Major immediately goes on the hunt for his killer, dragging his still shocked partner and best friend Roy Carver along for the ride.

Further details

DI John Major had it all. He was one of the best coppers in the country, with a glittering career in the Special Investigations Unit
where he served along with his partner and best mate DI Roy Carver. He had a loving wife, Kelly, who stuck with him through thick and thin. He had a great life. At least until he died. While working undercover on a sting operation, things went south and Major was gunned down in the line of duty. Someone had set him up, and he paid for it with his life... But, one year later, Major gets rebooted.

Making a dramatic resurrection thanks to an experimental police A.I. project, Major immediately goes on the hunt for his killer,
dragging a still shocked Carver along for the ride. However, some wires must have been crossed in Major's revival, as he's a few quid short of six million dollars. What's more, he's a bit confused as to why he can't just pick things up where he left off with Kelly. Perhaps Carver has something to do with that?

Line of Duty alumni, Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays, star in the comedy-drama Code 404, written by Daniel Peak, directed by Al Campbell. They play detective partners, one of whom, John Major (Mays) was killed in action, but then resurrected by artificial intelligence. It emerges that not only has DI Roy Carver (Graham) been involved with Major's wife (Anna Maxwell Martin), but now, if his revitalised partner makes too many mistakes, he can be "switched off".

As these are the kinds of roles that Mays and Graham excel in playing straight, it took a while to adjust my perceptions. It was delivered as a classic funny/straight double act, with May hurling himself into the comedy and Graham anxiously trying to contain the fallout. While Code 404 didn't always hit the mark in this opener, the energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and with this level of talent on board I will be sticking with it.

Code 404 review

This is an original comedy from Sky and possibly their best one, thanks to the cast. The joy is that in another universe this could have been a po-faced drama, and the three leads are sending themselves up.

TV review: Code 404 series 1 episode 1

Perhaps it's due to my love for this kind of near future shenanigans but as well as making me laugh I was gripped by the storyline and really can't wait to see how it plays out.

Alex Finch, Comedy To Watch, 30th April 2020

There's a touch of Robocop in this new series where Daniel Mays stars as DI John Major, killed in the line of duty but rebooted as a bionic detective a year later and reunited with his partner DI Roy Carver (Stephen Graham) to track down his killer. Major is a few marbles short of a full brain though, so the comedy ensues.

Ammar Kalia, The Guardian, 29th April 2020

Code 404 review

Sky's had a pretty good run with its comedy commissions lately, thanks to the likes of Breeders and Intelligence, and Code 404 - named after the 'page not found' error in internet protocols - is a solid and stupid addition to that decent slate.

Steve Bennett, Chortle, 29th April 2020

Life according to... Stephen Graham

Graham talks comedy, US slang, and upgrading his brain.

Stevie Gallacher, The Sunday Post, 28th April 2020

Stephen Graham admits doubting himself

Both Graham and Daniel Mays say it was the funniest set they have ever worked on, but Graham admits he was nervous at first and looked to his co-star for advice.
