George Logan, who performed the Hinge & Bracket drag act with Patrick Fyffe, has died aged 78.

Logan first performed his character Dr Evadne Hinge (pictured, right) alongside Fyffe's Dr Hilda Bracket (left) on London's gay cabaret circuit in the early 1970s before heading to the 1974 Edinburgh Festival, where they got their big break.

Their characters - two elderly women living in a Sussex village who reminisce about their classical music careers - became very popular, and they went on to star in a number of TV, radio and stage shows.

Radio 4 sitcom The Enchanting World Of Hinge And Bracket debuted in 1976 and ran for 40 episodes, followed by The Random Jottings Of Hinge And Bracket, which ran for nine series on BBC Radio 2 from 1982.

Their Hinge And Bracket musical comedy specials ran on BBC One between 1978 to 1981 and their BBC Two sitcom Dear Ladies, penned by Gyles Brandreth, ran for three series between 1983 and 1984. Other shows include the 1990 radio series At Home With Hinge And Bracket, and the duo also appeared on two Royal Variety shows and released seven albums.

Fyffe died in 2002, bringing the act to an end. Logan moved to France to run a B&B with his partner Louie.

Brandreth, writing on social media, said: "It was one of the great joys of my life to script the TV series & specials of Dear Ladies with Hinge & Bracket. Two very different guys who together created an irresistible double act - George was a brilliant musician with a subtle & wicked sense of humour. We had so much fun!"

Logan published his autobiography A Boy Called Audrey in 2015, detailing how growing up in Glasgow in the 1960s was a "complicated business" for an openly gay man.

The Enchanting World Of Hinge And Bracket

Three charming comedy series starring the dear ladies of a musical bent, Dr Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket.

Meet Hinge and Bracket, the delightful double act brought to sublime life by George Logan and Patrick Fyffe. Lifelong companions and musical collaborators, they enjoy nothing more than performing around the piano together and trading light-hearted banter spiced with comic innuendo and a double entendre or two.

Collected here are the very best of their radio appearances, including the pilot episode and first series of The Enchanting World Of Hinge And Bracket. From their home in the genteel Suffolk village of Stackton Tressel, the pair embark on a variety of adventurous escapades, such as staging a murder mystery, taking part in a sonic jamboree with Peter Pratt, appearing on Desert Island Discs with Roy Plomley, sailing off on a musical cruise and orchestrating a last-minute royal celebration.

Also featured are 17 episodes from The Random Jottings Of Hinge And Bracket. Introduced by entries from Dame Hilda's diary, they chronicle the further misadventures of the dear ladies, including organising a fancy dress ball, dealing with mice, woodworm and a headstrong donkey, partaking in a little too much home-made wine and squabbling over a holiday - and the milkman.

Rounding off the merriment is At Home With Hinge And Bracket, in which we join the duo for six informal soirees as they entertain celebrity guests Benjamin Luxton, Evelyn Laye, Jack Brymer, June Whitfield, Rosalind Plowright and Anthony Newley with their inimitable mix of songs and witty conversation.
