The patients admitted to Long Hampton Hospital are lucky enough to be attended to by eminent surgeon Frederick Carver - or so he thinks!

The snotty-nosed medical man is top of the pile at the NHS institution but has a lucrative private practice on the side and is keen to expand it further, preferably with the help of wealthy widow Ellen Moore. She is already a benefactor to medicine, funding a small hospital on the tropical Beatific Islands, but unfortunately for Carver is not so keen to expand her philanthropy in his direction.

Meanwhile, young doctor Jim Nookey appears to be a walking disaster area - and gets particularly easily flustered where the fairer sex are concerned! When one of his patients turns out to be beautiful pin-up and aspiring actress Goldie Locks, he falls quite literally head over heels, half destroying the hospital in the process.

With his career hanging by a thread, Carver spies an opportunity to get Nookey out of his immaculate hair for good and get in Mrs Moore's good books in the process: her medical mission is in need of a new doctor, and Nookey seems to fit the bill. As far as Carver's concerned, any solution that ends up with Nookey as far away as possible is a good one!

Arriving on the island, Nookey soon discovers that this tropical location is far from paradise. There are no patients, nothing to do, and once the 9-month rainy season is over, the 3-month hurricane season begins. Introduced to his right-hand man and orderly, Gladstone Screwer, it's not too long before Nookey makes a remarkable discovery: Gladstone has perfected a miraculous slimming potion, and he instantly spies the opportunity to return home to England and find fame and fortune!
