Birmingham Comedy Festival Breaking Talent Award review

Once they had all performed, it was clear that that Birmingham Comedy Festival's Breaking Talent Award was a two-horse race. In one corner, Tom Christian, with an appealing line in quirky, imaginative gags; in the other, the slick and wry observational comedy of Harv Hawkins. And in the end it was the latter who edged it.

TV review: The Outcast Comic, Sky Arts

Others remember where they were when they heard that Princess Diana had died. I remember where I was when I read Andrew Lawrence's famous Facebook post about the state of modern comedy and the state of the nation in October 2014. I thought it was, erm, interesting, and messaged him quickly to ask if I could post it on beyondthejoke. I then got on a train and when I logged back on he had replied, politely saying: "Good to hear from you, but I'd rather you didn't".

I once did a sketch with Michael Palin and Terry Jones. I was scared I'd screw up

Michael Palin was very touching when he spread the news that his friend and fellow Python Terry Jones is losing the power of speech. I was once on stage in a sketch with both of them, for a charity event, and during rehearsals was impressed with their meticulous dedication to the comic nuts and bolts, with Jones proving to be at least as sharp verbally as Palin.
