TV channel Gold will celebrate Blackadder's 40th anniversary in June with two new documentaries, Blackadder: The Lost Pilot and Blackadder: A Cunning Story.

In Blackadder: The Lost Pilot Baldrick star Sir Tony Robinson goes on a quest to discover the truth behind the Blackadder origin story.

Gold explain: "Tony's journey takes him back in time to find out where Blackadder really began, and to uncover the story of the never-before-broadcast 1982 Blackadder pilot episode.

"It's a personal story for Tony - Baldrick has defined his career and playing the character transformed his life. But Tony didn't play Baldrick in the pilot [Philip Fox did]. And there's so much about Blackadder's beginnings he doesn't know.

"Along the way he will speak to comedy greats including the series creator and writer Richard Curtis and co-writer Ben Elton. The climax of the programme will be a special screening of the never-before-broadcast pilot."

Tony Robinson says: "Blackadder holds a special place in the nation's heart and in mine too. I'm delighted to be part of its 40th Birthday celebrations on Gold. It's been wonderful to journey back to where it all began and chat to some of the biggest names in comedy who made it all happen."

The second documentary, Blackadder: A Cunning Story, will take a look back at the making of the entire Blackadder series to commemorate the 40th anniversary, featuring contributions from Blackadder's "biggest fans" including Jack Whitehall, Darren Harriott, Sarah Hadland, Ardal O'Hanlon and Nina Wadia.

UKTV's Gerald Casey says: "It's such a thrill to be celebrating one of the UK's best-loved series with this huge milestone. Blackadder is beloved by our Gold audience and still going strong on the channel, and I'm so happy to bring them something really special this June. True to form there will be big laughs guaranteed!"

Kirsty Hanson from the network adds: "Blackadder is a comedy icon, and we are proud to be celebrating 40 years with two fantastic new shows. With a TV first and some of the biggest names in comedy coming to the channel, viewers are in for a treat this Summer."

Tom Edwards of Blackadder: The Lost Pilot producers Red Sauce comments: "As a lifelong Blackadder fan, craving new material since it ended 30 years ago, I was beyond excited to learn of the existence of the 'lost' pilot. We're so thrilled to share that in full with viewers, along with the thoughts and feelings of an amazing cast of stars, as well as Tony's own very personal perspective."

Sarah Fraser, executive producer at Blackadder: A Cunning Story producers Tiger Aspect, notes: "Tiger comedy has a rich heritage, and we are happy to be a part of this special celebration, featuring some top talent and newer fans of Blackadder. All bringing a fascinating insight into how this legendary series was made and still stands up today."

Aside from the new content, Gold will celebrate Blackadder's 40th anniversary throughout June with episodes from all four series stripped across weeknights, with the new commissions airing the week of the anniversary, 15th June.

The True History Of The Black Adder: The Unadulterated Tale Of The Creation Of A Comedy Legend

By Jem Roberts

British history as we know it is a cluttered patchwork of questionable stories which have been re-written, re-evaluated and ridiculed, and yet there is still an unquestioned narrative thread which runs through the nation's historical record, accepted as fact. But final editorial control has always belonged to the winners. And nobody likes winners...

The True History Of The Black Adder is the very first in-depth examination of the creation of a British institution like no other - arguably the greatest sitcom of all time - not to mention the first historical investigation into the lives of the Blackadder family, one of the nation's most vilified dynasties.

Using existing archive footage and rare literature, plus new revelations from personal interviews with the makers including John Lloyd, Tony Robinson, Richard Curtis, Ben Elton, Stephen Fry, Brian Blessed and many more, J. F. Roberts relates the full scope of the tale of how the 70s alumni of three great universities - Oxford, Cambridge and not Hull, but Manchester - discovered a unique chemistry that would see them build a timeless comic masterpiece.

At last Blackadder enthusiasts can now uncover THE cunning plan, in all its hideous hilarity.

Blackadder's Historical Record

Demon Records presents all four TV series of the iconic sitcom classic on vinyl LP for the very first time - with an exclusive frameable print signed by Sir Tony Robinson.

"History, here I come!"

Rescued from a dusty shelf in a long-forgotten archive, Blackadder's Historical Record brings the bawdy, brutal and blithering bits of history to life via 24 full-cast TV soundtrack episodes. Housed in a leather-look rigid box with lift-off lid are a 12" frameable print portrait of Baldrick (each copy individually signed by Sir Tony Robinson), a colour illustrated booklet detailing cast, transmission and production credits (with sleeve notes from Sir Tony Robinson), and 12 opulent, gold colour 140g vinyl discs housed inside a dozen splendidly era-inspired inner sleeves.

From The Black Adder and Blackadder II to Blackadder The Third and Blackadder Goes Forth, this is one of British TV's best-loved sitcoms, which propelled its stars and writers on to become household names. Written by Richard Curtis & Rowan Atkinson (Series 1) and Richard Curtis & Ben Elton (Series 2-4) the episodes star Rowan Atkinson as the eponymous anti-hero, with Tony Robinson as his hapless manservant Baldrick. A star-studded supporting cast includes Tim McInnerny, Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, with guest appearances by Rik Mayall, Miriam Margolyes, Brian Blessed, Tom Baker and many, many more. (Cunning plan not included.)
