Anthony has gone back to Newcastle and Hilary is naturally depressed but she is more concerned about what to tell him about in her letter to him. Miss Flood meanwhile reveals that she has a new man in her life called Gerald who puts plaster casts on broken bones at the local hospital.

Alec is not at all happy with Jamie's effort at work in the last few weeks and decides that unless Jamie bucks his ideas up he will have no choice but to sack him. Alec gets a shock though when Jamie reveals that he has found a lump on his throat, which will need an operation, and this is what has been making him so tired all the time and not working hard enough.

Zoë and Alec spend a tense few hours waiting whilst Jamie is in theatre with Alec pacing up and down worrying. Hilary meanwhile meets Gerald whilst looking for Alec and Zoë. Jamie comes through the operation much to Alec's relief.
