Review: Death On The Tyne, Christmas Gold

It was pretty brave of Gold to schedule this one-off film on primetime on a Saturday night in the run-up to Christmas. But then the channel had reason to be ambitious. Their previous all-star Agatha Christie spoof starring Johnny Vegas and Sian Gibson, Murder on the Blackpool Express, was the highest-ever rating show on Gold. They will be hoping for the same here. And they might just get it.

Death on the Tyne, Gold, review

Another crude, silly and very funny outing.

Seasonal shenanigans of a different sort course through Ben Wheatley's new film Happy New Year, Colin Burstead, a nightmarish vision of familial disharmony starring Kill List's Neil Maskell as the eponymous host of a New Year's Eve get-together that starts going pear-shaped before his extended family even get through the door of the Downton Abbey-style heritage home he's rented for them. Hayley Squires, Charles Dance, Bill Paterson and Doon Mackichan are among the top-notch cast Wheatley has assembled to play Colin's squabbling relatives, but it's Sam Riley's appearance as the black sheep of the family that pushes everyone ever closer to the edge, particularly Colin, whose beleaguered, unappreciated effort to honour his family ties feels like an apt representation of the chaos of Brexit-era Britain.

Two Doors Down: Doon Mackichan steals the show

Doon Mackichan steals the show in this Burns Night horror.

Two Doors Down is fun with a strong cast

Two Doors Down (BBC Two) originally arrived on New Year's Eve 2013 as a one-hour, one-off comedy about a Hogmanay gathering gone wrong. It returned for a third series last night with an episode about another Scottish institution, Burns Night, complete with haggis, tatties and malt whisky, and proceeded to lacerate it for the next half hour.

Review - Alan Partridge: Why When Where How and Whom?

Steve Coogan's monstrous comic icon is all set to return to the BBC next year with a new Brexit-related show, so as a nice curtain-raiser this documentary about Alan Partridge works as both a laugh-packed clips show and a history of the spoof celebrity who put Norwich on the map.
