My evening with Noel Fielding

The point was we were all together, the flamboyant and the quiet Noel lovers, all eager to witness whatever hilarious weirdness he was about to throw at us.

10 memorable bits from The IT Crowd

When I read that Channel 4's The IT Crowd debuted ten years ago this week, I thought, "Great! This will be a fun and easy topic to write about." As a dedicated fan of this slightly surreal, smart and sometimes slapsticky sitcom, I wouldn't need to do any research. In fact, I could talk about Jen Barber (Katherine Parkinson), Maurice Moss (Richard Ayoade) and Roy Trenneman (Chris O'Dowd), the staffers of Reynholm Industries' subterranean IT department, ad nauseam. Easy peasy, right? Not at all!

Blackadder & Cold Feet: will they & should they return?

Last week there were reports that both the "historical" comedy Blackadder and the relationship dramedy Cold Feet might be returning to our TV screens. If you're like me, your original reaction is "Yes, please!" But after thinking about it for a few seconds, I've come to believe one must tread carefully when it comes to bringing back a beloved and popular series. Let's think this through.

The best thing I re-watched last week: Detectorists

The first time I watched Detectorists it was on YouTube. It was formatted so the picture filled up only about a third of the screen. The rest of the field was taken up with a frame emblazoned with the show's name across the top. Despite the poor viewing conditions, it was still probably the best comedy I saw last year. In fact, it won the BAFTA for best situation comedy of 2014 and a second series is currently in production.

Why I want to Car Share with Peter Kay

If my commute included congestion charges or my workplace offered significant incentives for riding with colleagues, I would definitely want Peter Kay as my car share comrade.

Historical sitcoms are a real thing in the UK

When I say "historical" in relation to television programming, what comes to mind? Drama, right? Human rights campaigns, wars, ancient civilizations; these are serious subjects which must be treated with solemnity and reverence. Apparently not in the UK where history has been the backdrop for many a comedic series. Look at the WWII era alone- It Ain't Half Hot Mum, 'Allo 'Allo! and Dad's Army. All three of these series are consistently named at the top of British sitcom polls.
