Inside No. 9 will return to BBC Two for its final series on Wednesday 8th May at 10pm.

Series 9 will feature six new episodes. Much of the plot details are still under wraps, however a previously revealed first look picture shows writers and stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton playing characters waiting for a train.

This has now been confirmed as a picture from the first episode in the new series, which has the title Boo to a Goose. The synopsis is: "Late-night passengers get stuck in a tunnel when their train breaks down. Patiently, they wait for the replacement service until a nurse gets her purse stolen and tempers start to fray."

The BBC says: "Once again, the series will feature six new stand-alone stories, each being set in a different location, the style and tone changing each week. Viewers will be invited into the extraordinary world of Shearsmith and Pemberton's storytelling."

Across the six episodes, guest stars will include Dorothy Atkinson (Mum), Charlie Cooper (This Country), Philippa Dunne (Motherland), Joel Fry (Plebs), Katherine Kelly (Bloods), Matthew Kelly (Stars In Their Eyes), Eddie Marsan (The World's End), Vinette Robinson (Code 404), Hayley Squires (A Royal Night Out) and Susan Wokoma (Cheaters).

Series 9 will also feature an episode involving Siobhan Finneran, the actor with whom Pemberton shared the screen with for long-running sitcom Benidorm. The run will also reunite the creators with two actors from their previous BBC Two series, Psychoville. Adrian Scarborough, who previously took on the role of Mr Jolly; and Mark Bonnar, who played Detective Finney in the second series.

The multi award-winning show is currently BBC Two's longest current running comedy, having launched in 2014. However, the creators have decided to end the format - at least for now - after this series, to allow them to concentrate on new projects. They've explained: "We're not saying it's over for good. After all, The League Of Gentlemen came back, but we won't be looking to make any more episodes for the time being."

They've later added: "It has been the greatest privilege to have been allowed to make 55 wildly different episodes and we'll miss the yearly challenge of trying to entertain and surprise our audience. We honestly feel like golden ticket winners - which makes us not a couple of Wonkas, but a pair of Charlies."

Series 9 trailer and synopsis

Series 9 is described as follows: "From the elegance of an Edwardian country house to the grim reality of the last train home, from nosy neighbours to grave robbers, from illicit visits to the toilet to a ticking clock in a sinister escape room, this ninth collection is sure to send the series off with a bang. A deadly mixture of classical music, dubious morals and murders at midnight, Shearsmith and Pemberton present six more films to delight and disturb their many fans around the world as they open the door marked No. 9 for the final time."
