Joe Wilkinson: 'I could never have written Fleabag'

The 8 Out of 10 Cats comedian on his love for old sitcoms, working with Motherland's Diane Morgan and his 'mundane' life at home.

Emily Baker, i Newspaper, 11th November 2019

Joe Wilkinson brings girlfriend Diane Morgan to the Isle of Wight to meet the parents in this three-part series. It is a well-trodden format but mum and stepdad Sue Johnston and Bobby Ball are cringe-inducingly funny as they negotiate spare beds for the couple and put on a bad lunch. Sitcom splendour from co-writers Wilkinson and David Earl.

The Guardian, 8th November 2019

Weirdy-beardy panel show regular Joe Wilkinson co-writes (with David Earl) and stars in this new three-part sitcom set on the Isle of Wight, a relatively untapped comedic setting. He plays Simon, nervously preparing to celebrate his 40th birthday by taking his girlfriend Donna (Diane Morgan) back to his childhood home to meet his daffy mum (Sue Johnston) and overbearing stepdad (Bobby Ball), unaware that his biological father (Nigel Havers) is also keen to elbow in on the fun.

Graeme Virtue, The Guardian, 31st August 2019

This whimsical show, built in the neurotic but sharp-witted image of its host, returns for a second series. Given that Richardson has made a career out of being a fusspot, it probably shouldn't be a surprise that the format has been tweaked. The panel discussing their anxieties has expanded from two to three - kicking off with Joe Wilkinson, Kiri Pritchard-McLean and, bravely, Richardson's wife, Lucy Beaumont - and there is a new "Worry Lab" area to allow for extra slapstick.

Review: Gervais gets spiny & squishy in After Life

Like its snarky hero, After Life is essentially good-hearted.

Review: After Life, Netflix

What is the new six-part Netflix series from Ricky Gervais? After Life is certainly funny but it is no sitcom. There is too much going on here that isn't funny to file it snugly under that genre. It's not that safety net catch-all "comedy drama" either though. It's something totally unique. And it deserves a category of its own.
