Maybe it's my accent but if I pronounced the r in iron I'd sound insane.

And it doesn't exactly cause complications. How often do you use an ion to do housework?

This will make you very cross. I also pronounce bold and bald exactly the same. And are and our. And Wednesday as Wensday. :)

Ion and iron in English are still stressed differently.

You have to shift your jaw to pronounce iron but not ion.

Blimey. You're showing your age.

I was so young I used to get him mixed-up with The Singing Nun.

"Domi-neeka neeka loit boy.." etc.

:D

She was in my womb and pram years.

Her - and the Theme from Z Cars.

I live in EA and that bit of dialogue was so wrong it buggered belief! :)

I suppose I would stress the 'o' a bit more in ion.
Definitely no trace of an 'r' in iron though (for me).

Clare Bolding then? :) Or someone who is hairless is bold? (Kenneth Williams - "Oooh, look at him - so bold").

Yep!

North Coast thereof indeed! :)

Pronounce both and tell us if your lower jaw moves on iron. Try saying it without moving jaw and then try the same with ion :)

I think my jaw does the same thing with both. :S

Me too, and I suspect anyone south of Watford does the same.

No it doesn't unless you are a ventriloquist dummy!

:D

Uh oh.

What's with all these pictures of 'celebrities' having buckets of water poured over them?

Feck off !

??? I'm confused. How else would you pronounce it? Surely not 'ion'?

Funny really because we say 'irony' pronouncing the R. How would you distinguish between being ironic or like an iron?

Having been away for a fortnight it's nice to see the BCG is still the unique and slightly disturbing place I left it. A discussion on whether your jaw moves if you say ion or iron is just what I needed to reassure me I'm back home!

What do you Welsh know about proper pronunciation?
