Ion and iron in English are still stressed differently.
You have to shift your jaw to pronounce iron but not ion.

Pronounce both and tell us if your lower jaw moves on iron. Try saying it without moving jaw and then try the same with ion
I think my jaw does the same thing with both.

Funny really because we say 'irony' pronouncing the R. How would you distinguish between being ironic or like an iron?
