Given that the first two series of their comedy extravaganza ran to seven episodes apiece, is it wrong to feel shortchanged as Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer's four-show run reaches its conclusion? Really, we should be grateful for every surreal minute we get to spend in their company. Here, they open with a skit on vehicle maintenance among the celebrity community, surprise us with an "up-to-date dance project" and save the best for last when the Man with the Stick returns from the future in all his silvery splendour.

It's taken Bob 30 years to get his name alongside Vic's on the Big Night Out but now, as a cult hero in his own right, he not only deserves equal billing but an equal share of the credit.

Whatever Vic and Bob have lost in manic energy, they have gained in warmth. It is charming that this pair of schoolboy surrealists still take such infectious delight in making each other laugh. Tonight, a sneak preview of Vic's Royal Variety turn and the return of sinister folk duo Mulligan and O'Hare.

It opens with a song which just happens to be one of the greatest they've ever done, as they insult a couple eating a meal and which includes the lines "Shut up, shut up and just stop talking shit".

Reeves and Mortimer reprise their cult variety show parody with the first in a four-part series. Random questions - "How high is your cat?" - and a song-and-dance routine designed to sabotage romantic dinners are great, but top of the pile is "Britain's only gay man" and his pet owl on Novelty Island.
