Starting out in stand-up

So you've decided to become a stand-up comic? That's absolutely terrific: good for you. Often "breaking into" the comedy industry can feel like an impossible challenge - you see the names in lights above a massive theatre, or the comedians on Live At The Apollo or Have I Got News For You and think, "How do I get there?!".

The truth is, even overnight successes rarely - virtually never - happen overnight. It requires years of work. And you have to start somewhere. The first rung on the performance ladder is usually making some appearances at open mic nights.
