The Fringe hit list: comedy, music and theatre

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, the Fringe denies no-one entry.

Nadine McBay, The National (Scotland), 6th August 2017

Uncles review

Robert Florence and Iain Connell should be applauded for bringing their show this far north. It is unapologetically Glasgow-centric.

Brian Donaldson, The List, 30th March 2017

Comedy review: Uncles

The latest venture from Burnistoun creators Robert Florence and Iain Connell, Uncles is already displaying the potential to eclipse their frequently great BBC Scotland sketch show. In this far leaner endeavour, the two play a couple of nameless Glaswegians on the cusp of middle-age, simply catching up and setting the world to rights in their local pub, their only props their drinks, a table and chairs. Redolent of Derek and Clive or the Smith and Jones head-to-heads, with perhaps an occasional dash of Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse as the fuming Self-Righteous Brothers, Uncles relies on and revels in patter for patter's sake, and is jammed full of lines to savour.

Burnistoun meets Baltimore in the Fringe's special show

Iain Connell and Robert Florence reveal why their hit sketch show is like The Wire as they prepare for their Fringe debuts.

Jay Richardson, The Scotsman, 8th August 2016

Comedy is still king, but with less attendants

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is with us and this year, more than ever comedy is king. Yet, this year, more than ever, stand-up comedy rules supreme, and it's to be expected. Not only is the nation on the search for post-Brexit referendum, negative interest rates, pre-President Trump laughs, it's on the search for cheap laughs. That is, recession laughs, shows which are relatively cheap to stage.
