Kirrin Island April 2013

With Newsjack coming to an end next week you may be thinking what next for your finely honed topical comedy skills. Well how about Live From Kirrin Island.

Kirrin Island is a topical comedy podcast put together by members of the BCG with a number of BBC Radio credits between them. But it's also an open submission show and we're inviting you to submit sketches and one-liners for the next show. The whole show is set on Kirrin Island (home to the Famous Five adventures) where life on the island closely reflects what's happening in the UK. As we record every few months we're not necessarily ultra-topical but looking to cover the big news stories that people will remember in a few weeks time. To find out more about what we're looking for please do read the Writers' Brief here: http://kirrinislandpodcast.com/wiring/writers-brief/

This time around things are a little different for sketches. We're asking people to e-mail their sketchs to us at LiveFromKirrinIsland@gmail.com rather than post them on the BCG. Each person can submit up to three sketches and all sketches must be with us on or before Saturday 30th March. We're hoping to provide feedback to everyone who submits sketches (provided we don't get hundreds of entries!). As the KI team includes those with several BBC credits, those who've been invited into BBC workshops / writing days and commissioned writers we hope this will be useful! We're also would like you to have the opportunity to re-write your own sketches although turnaround for this will be tight. For more information on submission please read the Episode 4 guidelines here: http://kirrinislandpodcast.com/wiring/episode-4-details/

For one-liners they will be submitted via Critique on the BCG as usual. This is the thread for posting your one-liners on: https://www.comedy.co.uk/forums/thread/27012#P962826
Remember we are interested in seeing your best one-liners - quality rather than quantity! Given the volume of one-liners we receive we won't be able to give feedback on all one-liners.
The deadline for one-liners is Wednesday 3rd April. We may also ask for more up-to-date one-liners via twitter so please keep an eye on @LiveFrom KI

One of the best ways to get a feel for the show is to listen to previous episodes here: http://www.KirrinIslandPodcast.com
Or indeed come to a recording. KIPOD4 will be recorded on Sunday 7th April 2013 from 2:30pm at The Phoenix, Cavendish Sq, London. No ticket required so just come along for a Sunday afternoon of FREE comedy.

Phew, that's a big post but wanted to try and cover all the key points. If you've any questions please do post them on this thread. Look forward to reading your work!

Details for Live From Kirrin Island episode 4 are now posted above.

So just in case any of you are getting Newsjack withdrawal symptoms already... :D

And if you prefer a little taste of the show visually, here's an animated sketch http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=g-user-u&v=BzwyR1OiuQA with a couple more on the KI YouTube channel.

Great to see some stuff coming in already. Us script editors are particularly grateful to those who submit well in advance of the deadline!

We've updated the website with a list of topics we'd like to cover in the show in some way. Please feel free to submit anything that's topical & funny but we'll probably be doing something on these areas:

Budget
Cyprus 10%
Falklands (our fellow islanders...)
North Korea aggression
Press regulation
Archbishop of Canterbury & Pope inauguration services
May / Gove slow leadership bid
Putting off Romanians & Bulgarians coming
Horse meat scandal

We'll try and keep the website updated (link below) so you'll see what's new that we need stuff on and what we think has been covered already by a good sketch.

And for more info keep an eye on this thread and our twitter account @LiveFromKI

We've added a few more topics to the writers' brief, namely:

David Miliband leaving politics
Immigration battles
Covering up the NHS
The Mayor'a political ambitions.

And if you fancy writing a sports sketch:
Vettel ignoring team orders
Tiger Woods on top again

Remember the deadline for sketches is Saturday!

The deadline for sketch submissions has now passed.

Thanks to all who sent stuff in, we've received more sketches that for any other episode of Kirrin Island so please bear with us as we try and read through it all!

And don't forget you can still send us your one-liners as the deadline for them is Wednesday.

Well we've read a LOT of you sketches over the weekend so thanks for sending them in. We received over 100 sketches so as you can appreciate that's a fair amount to get through and read! (Okay nothing compared to Newsjack, my hat goes off to them).

As off tonight we have sent out requests for re-writes but just so you know here's where we stand:

We've deliberately asked for a larger than needed number of re-writes as we want to give as many people as possible a chance of getting something in the show. So we can't guarantee that being asked for a re-write will get you in the recording but it does mean you wrote something we liked!

And we should also say that not being asked for a re-write doesn't mean your stuff won't be in the show. Some sketches we liked have gone straight into the Saturday writers' room with no need for a re-write.

If you feel you really want to write something there's always the one-liners which can be posted on critique.

And a reminder that the recording for episode 4 of Live From Kirrin Island is today! It'll be 2:30pm at The Phoenix, Cavendish Sq, London W1G 0PP. No ticket required just come along for a Sunday afternoon of free comedy.v

If you're a writer it's a great way to get a feel for the show and what we're after, even if you didn't submit anything this time.

The cast and crew will hanging around for a drink afterwards (once we've packed up etc.) so feel free to join us. Always good to meet those who've submitted / may submit in the future to the show.

Really enjoyed the last one but got my daughters birthday today so not possible to get down.
Hey Sootyj, don't even try to smuggle in any rotten veg to chuck, they got tomato sniffer dogs on the door.

Well done all. Good show today. Or should I say "Good game. Good Game."

Is that how you pronounce it?

Dan

Thank goodness you didn't get any big stories breaking between recording and broadcast Laughing out loud

Tell me about it...
