I read the news today oh boy! Page 1,761

That's certainly an impressive explosion.

This one at a Nevada plant that produced solid rocket fuel was 30x-50x larger, but fortunately it was out in a sparsely populated portion of the desert.

Hmmm, I know Americans like to claim the biggest of everything ;) and it was impressive, but I think you will find the Chinese one was much, much larger and in fact the explosion was picked up as an earthquake in the USA.

Nope. The Chinese blast was the equivalent of 21 tons of TNT, while the Nevada explosion was estimated at 1000 tons. The Chinese explosion was the equivalent of a magnitude 2.9 earthquake, while the one in Nevada was a 3.5.

America!

I see your Nevada and raise you a Krakatoa ('spect that won't be big enough Whistling nnocently )

Eat my Tunguska, you losers!

I see that what you posted and raise you............

The biggest cosmic explosion EVER seen: 'Monster' gamma ray burst blasts into space 3.7 billion light years away
The cosmic explosion happened 3.7 billion light years away in April 2013
It created energy bursts five times stronger than the largest known blast
Gamma ray bursts happen when stars die and collapse into black holes

Astronomers believe the only bigger display would have been the Big Bang
If the burst had happened closer to Earth it could've destroyed the planet

C'mon, we're talking about accidental, man-made explosions. The Russians win with a rocket explosion and the Canadians come in second with a munitions ship explosion. Third is a ship explosion in Texas.

My favourite man-made disaster is this one:

Oh, man. :(
Killed by treacle, that's embarrassing.

I still maintain though that the Chinese explosion caused more material damage, and I think that was the point I was trying to make.

That reminds me of the awful Aberfan disaster in 1966. 116 children killed in an instant. Terrible...........

Re Lord Janner

'His council said it would be "barbaric, inhumane and uncivilised" to force him to appear in court in person, and that it would be a breach of his human rights.

But the judges, Lady Justice Rafferty and Mr Justice Irwin, rejected that argument, saying any harmful impact on Janner would be short-lived and that he would probably forget it soon after due to his dementia.'

Made me smile...

How the f**k could it be barbaric - well at least his peers (phnar) are not closing ranks. which makes a change.

Actually that's probably very true. My mother fell victim to two neds who talked their way in, ransacked a cupboard and took £80 her purse (all right, I shouldn't have let her have that amount but she always got upset if she thought she didn't have money). The home help disturbed them and they got away. She phoned the Police and me and we all got there pretty quickly, but by the time we arrived my mother had absolutely no recollection of anything and wasn't even upset by having 2 uniformed police people in her house.

So, the drug testing in athletics is a shambles it seems.

Maybe in a million years' time man (and woman!) may have developed the ability to run on all fours and be able to run faster, or develop muscles that enable them to throw further, leap higher etc. etc. but in the meantime the increase in records will remain pretty static - the next step being maybe a timing device that can measure in gazillionths of a second.

So, let them all take drugs, saving all this hassle of testing and make for a more interesting (yawn) "sport".
