2011 Edinburgh Fringe

Tony Law interview

Tony Law

Tony Law is widely regarded by the comedy industry as one of the best comics on the circuit. This year he is bringing his own special brand of funny to the Fringe by asking the question we've probably all asked ourselves at some point. Namely; "Is Tony Law a way of doing comedy?" Lucy Wood finds out more...

What's this year's show about, Tony?

It's a partner piece to Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. Yet not. Stand-up comedy? Ish.

You are very highly regarded in the industry; who you admire?

Munnery, Lee, Sanderson Jones, Steve Martin's stand-up. So many, many on the stand-up scene thingy who you don't usually catch on panel shows and bland stand-up shows. Suttie, Long, Maria Bamford. Many more. Hall.

How do you go about creating your show?

New material nights every Monday, like Old Rope. Try things that pip into your head, write on stage. Basically everything in your life, or what you're reading or watching will come out in some unexpected splurb. Where do I get my inspiration from? Maybe Bowie in the 70s? Learning from children. History. Animals. Space.

Are you different to your stage persona? How would your family and friends describe you?

When I'm up, yes. Funnier in real life, but only for short bits. Long periods of grump masked as lazy shyness. Rude and funny.

What advice do you have for an aspiring performer?

Don't take advice - do what you think is funny.

Who will you be going to see at the Fringe?

Everyone at The Stand. Then see way above, to the second question.

And what's next after August?

A tour straight throughout the British Isles, at tiny venues everywhere.

Tony Law: Go Mr Tony Go! is on at The Stand at 12:00, until August 28. It's getting some very nice reviews. Listing
