Brambles are a pain...control them as early as poss or you'll be stuck with the blighters.
Tasty though.
You can buy cultivated brambles which don't grow like wankers and are thornless.

I have 5 sunflowers which were being eaten by snails, so yesterday I put down slug pellets around just those plants. As of this morning, I've removed a total of 110 dead snails... 
Slug pellets are nasty.
You could put some egg shells or coffee grounds down.
Better for the birds.

I would post a pic of a American one and write not ow underneath. But I'm not sure which is the common one.
This is the common one. Very unlikely for one to be able to land on the floor prongs up.
