Tommy Butler, a widower of 70, is becoming more awkward, grouchy and mischievous in his declining years. Which is not good for his daughter who has decided to let him live with her.
Her husband, Brian, is far less enthusiastic, but with Tommy's home condemned and demolished, there's not much alternative. Things are looking grim and stressful all-round, but Tommy's given a new lease of life - and a reason to leave the flat - when he befriends young teenage tearaway Charlie.
