  • Cold Feet is to "take a break from our TV screens before embarking on a tenth series"
  • The hit comedy drama concluded its ninth series last night
  • ITV confirmed the show will be "rested" until time has passed to explore the next stage in the characters' lives

ITV has announced the "conscious uncoupling" of Cold Feet.

The comedy drama concluded its ninth series on the broadcaster's main ITV channel last night, with the leading characters embarking on "new beginnings, as new challenges test the oldest of friendships".

Created and written by Mike Bullen, the broadcaster confirmed that there would be a tenth series of the popular programme, but potentially not for a number of years.

Originally piloted in 1997, the comedy drama first ran for five series to 2003, before returning in 2016 and running for four further series.

Now, Bullen, the production team and ITV have all agreed to allow the series to again "rest" for a number of years, and return to revisit and chart the lives of the central characters - played by James Nesbitt, John Thomson, Fay Ripley, Hermione Norris and Robert Bathurst - at a later point in their lives.

Bullen says: "We feel we've explored to our satisfaction the issues confronting the characters at this stage of their lives and we want to give them all a little time to move on, to put clear water between the stories we've told thus far and the issues they'll be exploring when they are empty nesters staring down the barrel of grandparenthood. We're looking forward to returning at a later date to document the agony and the ecstasy of the third age..."

James, Hermione, Robert, Fay and John said: "The Cold Feet team have proved that life never stops being funny, challenging and bitter sweet. So, although the show will take a well earned break, we all look forward, when the time is right, to returning to warm the nation's hearts once again."

Kenton Allen, Executive Producer and boss of production company Big Talk, adds: "We're so proud to have brought Cold Feet back for four amazing series and are now taking a well earned holiday and saying au-revoir and definitely not farewell to a much loved series that has defined generations of ITV viewers."

Details of the potential length of Cold Feet's break from television screens have not been announced.

A complete Series 1 - 9 DVD box set is now available to pre-order.
