  • The recommission has been announced ahead of Series 3 coming to television

CBBC has ordered a fourth series of So Awkward, the comedy about three school girls.

The hit children's comedy has so far run for two series, with a third set to be broadcast this year. Series 4 will be filmed this summer, to be broadcast next year.

Created by writer Julie Bower, the show focuses on three very academically bright, but socially awkward girls. Straight A 'super-nerds' Lily, Martha and Jas are an inseparable trio, bound together by brains, loyalty and embarrassment. While other girls their age are going to parties, netball practice and sleepovers, Lily, Martha and Jas are busy with chess club, homework and Friday nights in watching documentaries.

In an article about making the show, Bower explained: "I wanted to create something fun, inclusive, female but with flawed characters."

Series 4 of So Awkward will comprise of 12 thirty minute episodes. The core cast of Sophia Dall'Aglio (Martha), Cleo Demetriou (Lily), Ameerah Falzon-Ojo (Jas), Jamie Flatters (Matt) and Archie Lyndhurst (Ollie) are all expected to return for the new episodes.

The sitcom is made by Channel X North, a division of Channel X, the production company run by Alan Marke and Jim Reid. The producers are currently also filming a third series of Detectorists and have been commissioned by Sky Arts to make a one off 60-minute documentary on Sir Peter Blake, the renowned British artist who is best known for co-creating the iconic artwork for The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Alan Marke says: "We are thrilled with the latest re-commissions for Detectorists and So Awkward, which will see us filming across the summer in the beautiful English countryside and urban landscapes of Manchester. We're also excited to be working with Sky Arts again, following the success of our documentary The Jam: About The Young Idea in 2015."

Channel X launched in 1987 to make Jonathan Ross show The Last Resort. Marke comments: "It's great that 30 years since our first programme we are working on such a variety of projects and still creating original, quirky and iconic content."
