Hosted by David Tennant, and featuring the pick of Britain's finest comedy talent, Comedy World Cup is a seven-part panel show in which Tennant referees two teams of comedians as they compete against each other in a knockout competition in which the questions are about other comedians and TV comedy shows.
In each episode the teams, whose careers and comedy know-how span a total of 100 years, pit their wits against each other in a series of rounds to find out which team are the biggest comedy brainboxes and fountains of funny knowledge.
Each team is made up of three comedians - a team captain in their 30s/40s, an over-50 comedy 'legend', and a comedy newbie in their 20s/30s.
At the end of the series there's a final where the two best teams go head-to-head, with one crowned ultimate champions and winners of the Comedy World Cup 2012.
The rounds are:
The Year In Question: The team must name the year that connects a series of clips shown to them.
The Young Ones: A schoolchild performs part of a stand-up routine, and the teams must name which well known comedian's routine it is.
Picture Round: Stills from comedy films are shown, but with the actors' flesh (e.g. head, hands) Photoshopped out. The teams must name the film then answer a question related to the film.
Sitcom Graveyard: One of the teams reads out three sitcom synopsis, only one of which is a real programme. The other team must say which was the real show.
In The Spotlight: One of the team members must answer a minute's worth of quick-fire questions.
What Happens Next: A clip from a well-known comedy is screened but paused at a cliffhanger moment, and the team must say what follows next.
Quick-fire Round: To end the show, Tennant reads out some general knowledge questions about comedy shows and comedians, and the teams must buzz in.
