Episode menu
Series 1, Episode 1
David Mitchell takes us from 1913 to 1938, examining both cutting edge comedy innovation in the Music Hall and the early days of the movies, which though silent at the start, were virtually entirely comedy based.
Further details
David discovers exactly what people mean when they say 'British' comedy, before taking us back to the Music Hall of 1913. From there it's a rollercoaster ride to 1938 - taking in the role of women in comedy, why people become comedians in the first place, and how regional comedians became national heroes.
