Interview: Stewart Francis - Part #1

Daring yet modest, visceral but compassionate, and keen to guard his privacy despite that oh-so-obvious talent as a performer, Stewart Francis is a ball of contradictions. But in a revealing, two-part interview with Giggle Beats, Francis admits stand-up wasn't "the plan."

Stewart Francis in talks over new sitcom

Stand-up Stewart Francis is writing a sitcom. This show, a Family Guy inspired trip into the mind of the gag merchant, would be Francis' first solo TV project since making the trip across the pond.

John Bishop's Only Joking was Sky1's take on ITV's legendary stand-up show The Comedians. Only this time, as well as stand-ups it had celebrities and civilians telling jokes while John Bishop acted as compere.

More often than not the civilians delivered the best gags, especially the ten-year-old schoolboys. But nobody could compete with Mock The Week's star man Stewart Francis. Here's his best effort: 'The thing I don't like about my children is that when things go wrong they have a tendency to blame other people... They get that from their mum.'

South London chancer Lee Nelson (the well wickid innit bruv creation of comic Simon Brodkin) takes no prisoners with his opening routine. The death of his grandad, dogging, his crush on the Little Mermaid - nothing is off-limits, and Lee is such a cheery, shouty, in-your-face caricature, he can get away with anything, more or less.

Tough act to follow? Not for Canadian one-liner merchant Stewart Francis, who won the prize for funniest joke at this year's Edinburgh fringe: "You know who really gives kids a bad name? Posh and Becks."

Stewart Francis review

Pun based comedy is one of the hardest forms to master as the audience tend to groan when they hear them done badly. But when you master the ability to deliver them you are almost untouchable and seem to be able to get away with anything. Stewart Francis has definitely earned this merit.

Review - Stewart Francis: Outstanding in his Field

One skill Francis has appeared to have within his armoury is an ability to broach contentious territory yet somehow comes up smelling of roses.

Comedy gold: Stewart Francis's Tour de Francis

This suave, mic-wearing Canadian may look like a conference- hall shyster but he's a master of the slow-burning punchline.
