Based on Richard Gordon's original comic novel, Doctor At Sea was adapted for the screen by Gordon, with a screenplay by Nicholas Phipps and Jack Davies.

Dirk Bogarde (re)wrote parts of the script but was not credited for this work.

Producer Betty E. Box bought the rights to the Doctor At Sea book before the prior film, Doctor In The House, had even finished filming, so sure was she of box office success.

Brigitte Bardot's singing in the nightclub scene was dubbed by Jill Day in post production.

Party scenes were filmed aboard the Agamemnon, with location filming taking place in Venice.
