Fringe: The weird, the whacky, and the wonderful

An aubergine, a naked magician and Jesus Christ on a BMX stroll into a bar ... is this the start of a strange joke? Well, yeah, but it is also some of the performers you might find at The Last Drop bar in Edinburgh after a day's work at this year's Fringe.

Saul Sorooshian, The Herald, 7th August 2016

Bridget Christie on laughing in the face of Brexit

All changed, changed utterly. The show that comedian Bridget Christie is performing in Edinburgh this month isn't the show she had planned. That was called Mortal and it was about just that: mortality. But then Britain - or rather large parts of England and Wales (but not London, where she lives) - decided to vote to leave the European Union. We now live in another country. And how can you ignore that, she says?

Teddy Jamieson, The Herald, 7th August 2016

Rarely asked questions - Elliot Steel

Am I getting older or are the comedians getting younger? Probably both I guess. When I was first impressed by Elliot Steel a couple of years ago he was doing autobiographical gags about underage drinking. That's how young he is. Since then he has become old enough to vote and become a sharper, more mature comedian while still retaining that mischievous scalliwag streak. It's probably no surprise he is so skilful, his father is seasoned stand-up Mark Steel, so in a way he is going into the family business. Did he inherit the talent or was he taught it? Never mind the nature/nurture bollocks, he's funny and that's what matters.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 7th August 2016

Did you hear the one about the 'ugly' disabled singer?

Comedian Mike Ward's joke about the boy who sang for the pope might not be funny, but is that any reason to fine him $42,000?
