BBC Three's Cuckoo is to return for a third series.

Starring Greg Davies and Helen Baxendale, the sitcom originally featured Andy Samberg as wayward hippie Cuckoo. Twilight star Taylor Lautner joined as Cuckoo's son, Dale, in Series 2 following Samberg's departure.

Lautner, Davies and Baxendale will all return for the third series, alongside co-stars Esther Smith and Tyger Drew-Honey.

The sitcom originally observed uptight father Ken (Davies) and his more relaxed wife, Lorna (Baxendale), being shocked when daughter Rachel (Tamla Kari in Series 1) returned from a gap year's travelling with a surprise, hippie husband in tow.

Cuckoo's presence was an immediate and constant annoyance to Ken, who tried to get him to leave both Rachel and the country at every possible opportunity.

However, following Cuckoo's disappearance and apparent death whilst on a brief trip to Nepal at the start of Series 2, his disruptive position in the family home was quickly filled by Dale, a son Cuckoo never knew he had, who had grown up in a cult and come in search of his father.

The BBC explains: "Series 3 of Cuckoo re-joins the Thompson family six months after Dale's dramatic departure at Christmas. Ken and Lorna are preparing for the birth of their new baby. Dylan, much to Ken's delight, is getting ready to fly the nest as he prepares to leave for university. Rachel is heartbroken and pining for Dale, but has managed to salvage a questionable friendship with jilted 'bestie' Ben. Life is slowly getting back to normal in Lichfield when a transformed Dale returns to throw more spanners in the family works."

Shane Allen, the BBC's Controller of Comedy Commissioning says: "Cuckoo is the quintessential BBC Three series - a grabby concept, world class talent and writers destined for greatness."

Dan Hine of production company Roughcut Television says: "Cuckoo is a jewel in the Roughcut crown, and we can't wait to get cracking on the third series. We hope audiences will enjoy seeing Davies and Lautner - TV's unlikeliest comedy duo - return as men reinvented."

The series is likely to be broadcast toward the end of 2015.
