You don't need to understand or even like chicklit to know it's popular. You mentioned porn, most of which is targeted at males, and is 'wham-bam', porn that is enjoyed by women tends to have a story, and a nice duvet cover.

and in answer to how many working comedians there are, you'd have to be a bit more specific. If you include open spots like me it's thousands. If you mean comedians who gig as their regular income, then... actually probably towards four figures as well.
I bet Tony Cowards will know.

Stand up doesn't HAVE to be short punchy one liners. It can be anything you want, that's the beauty of it.
There were only two women on when I performed the other day, out of about fifteen acts. I'd say both were amongst the best on the night. So basically, there's less of them, but they're funny.

Number of comedians making their living from comedy in the UK? Hmmm... tough one but I would guess at somewhere between 500-1000, but bear in mind that at the top levels they'll be making more money from TV, books, films, etc and at the lower levels they are probably supplementing their income by writing, temping, etc.
Apropos of not very much in particular but I took part in a "Roving Comedy Night" which went around four different venues which featured four pros and twelve brand new acts, out of the newbies I think three were women and two of those were voted the best new acts of the evening.
More women are coming onto the circuit and making a name for themselves (see Angela Barnes winning the BBC New Comedy Award) but it'll take a few more years yet for the balance to get anywhere near to 50/50.
