Sandylands, the new sitcom set in a seaside resort, is to return for a second series, British Comedy Guide can reveal.

UKTV channel Gold has ordered another run of the comedy following the success of the first series, which aired on the channel across three nights in early March.

Written by Martin Collins and Alex Finch, the show follows Emily, a woman who returns to her seaside home town after several years of living in London. The series opened with her father, local celebrity arcade owner Les Vegas, going missing in suspicious circumstances.

Natalie Dew plays Emily, with Sanjeev Bhaskar as Les. The cast also features David Walliams and Sophie Thompson as a pair of oddball B&B owners; Simon Bird as Emily's potential love-interest, police officer Nathan; and Harriet Webb as Tina, Emily's old school friend and local tour guide.

Hugh Bonneville also starred in the programme, playing a dour insurance investigator, and there were regular roles for Craig Parkinson, Bronwyn James, Hamza Jeetooa and Darren Strange.

The scripts for the new episodes have already been written, BCG understands. The comedy is filmed in Weston-super-Mare, and production company King Bert are expected to begin location filming later in the year, lockdown restrictions permitting.

The recommission has yet to be officially announced, and UKTV made no comment when approached by British Comedy Guide.

As reported last week, Gold has also recommissioned its other new comedy, The Cockfields. The new episodes of both shows are expected to be broadcast in 2021.
