Filming has begun on the second series of Chewing Gum, the multi-award winning E4 sitcom written by and starring Michaela Coel.

The channel has ordered six more episodes of the show, with all the main cast set to return.

Chewing Gum focuses on the life of Tracey Gordon, a religious Beyoncé-obsessed 22-year-old who is fast finding out that "the more she learns about the world, the less she understands". Other characters include on-off boyfriend Connor and her uptight older sister, Cynthia.

The first series, which was shown in October 2015, has won multiple awards, including a BAFTA for creator Michaela Coel.

E4 explains: "At the end of the first series, we saw Tracey and Connor leaving the Pensbourne Estate, dressed only in their pants and walking into the sunset and the unknown. Both had been thrown out of home, Cynthia's wedding day ended in disaster, Connor lost his job, and their lives were all in a bit of a mess. Things weren't looking great.

"As filming begins on the six new episodes of the second series, Michaela Coel once again invites viewers to the Pensbourne Estate and into Tracey Gordon's outrageous, surreal, vibrant and colourful life."

The network has confirmed Danielle Walters and Kadiff Kirwan are returning as Candice and her boyfriend Aaron, Susan Wokoma is back as Tracey's Ludo-loving sister Cynthia, and Robert Lonsdale has signed up to play Tracey's boyfriend Connor again. Olisa Odele (Ola), Maggie Steed (Esther) and Shola Adewusi (Tracey's mother Joy) also return.

The new episodes will be shown on E4 later this year.
