Ricky Gervais has confirmed that Derek, his Channel 4 show set in a retirement home, will end after a forthcoming final special episode.

Writing on his blog, the star declared: "I've been working on a Derek special actually. I did toy with a third series, particularly after the Emmy nod, but I decided to stick to my usual formula of two series and a special."

Gervais gave no further details about the final special, however given production timescales it could be predicted that the episode will be filmed and shown on TV early in 2015.

Series 2 of Derek finished broadcasting in May 2014. It saw Derek meet a girl for a date in a restaurant, with love potentially blossoming from that meeting.

The Derek Series 2 DVD is now available to pre-order, with a release date set for 17th November.

As previously reported, the next project from Gervais is Life On The Road, a new movie which will focus on David Brent, his famous character from The Office.

The publicity blurb released by BBC Films explains: "We find out what Brent is doing now and what's happened in the last 15 years since his redundancy from his beloved Wernham Hogg. He's a sales rep now, selling cleaning products up and down the country, but has never really given up on his dream of being a rock star."

Gervais revealed the news about Derek by way of an explanation as to why he hadn't done anything on the movie project this week. In reference to the Derek special, he explained: "That's why I haven't made much progress with Life On The Road. I did write a new song though. It's called 'Native American', and it's David's insightful look at how the North American Indian has been treated. He basically used Wikipedia and then made stuff rhyme, but I'm pretty sure that's how Bono does it these days too. The difference is, Brent tries to sell his songs and not just give them away, willy nilly. He does have similar taste in Cuban heels and glasses though."

More details about the Derek special will follow at a later date.
