It's Friday 9th April 1999, the date to conceive a 'millennium baby'. Whilst Tony attempts to humour a rather dim-witted work-experience girl, Bren's main concern is having workmen in to paint the canteen without closing for the duration.

Jean's husband leaves her for a dental assistant in south Wales, and her colleagues feel the force of her frustration and anger. Meanwhile, Petula has a more-than-slightly surprising announcement to make.

After the events of New Year's Eve, Anita's left the canteen. Her replacement, Christine, has chronic flatulence and manages to upset, annoy, and/or anger everyone within a couple of hours. On top of that, the social services want Petula to live with Bren!

Petula makes a surprise announcement, and Bren is excited to have been picked to appear on TV quiz show Totally Trivial. Tony's hoping she'll come away with him to a new life in Scotland.

The toaster breaks down, but the company refuses to pay for a new one; Bren fails to make it to the TV studio in time to play for the final £10,000 prize; and Petula's time on this earth does indeed finally come to an end. Unfortunately, there's still more upsetting news in store for the canteen staff.
