The surnames of the characters are tributes to the original duo: Norvell was Hardy's middle name, whilst Jefferson was Laurel's real surname.
Whilst the other six episodes in Seven Of One were intended as pilots, Another Fine Mess was only ever conceived as a single episode, allowing Barker and Castle to pay tribute to the legendary comedy duo.
