The store's burglar alarm keeps going off - every hour, on the hour, in fact. Threatened with arrest for wasting police time, Tripper deactivates the alarm and spends the night on guard in his office. Meanwhile, the one-member union is on strike, and the store welcomes its millionth customer.

Harry is at a low ebb. Finding himself unemployed and unemployable, he turns to religion and then to crime in his desperation. When this fails, he decides that suicide is the only answer. Chance meetings with the beautiful Nancy and his former military colleague Tim Beamish prove a distraction however, and persuade Harry that his life has a purpose. He will form a secret army to save Britain when the balloon goes up.
