Sketch writing is a tried and tested way for new writers to get their big break in the comedy world. A producer commissioning a three minute sketch from a brand new writer is much less risky than them commissioning a 6 part sitcom series from that person. Not to mention significantly cheaper, and less likely to cost them their job if your work flops.
