The importance of story

Sitcoms are arguably the most sophisticated way we've come up with to deliver stories which make us laugh.

Obviously we love the characters - and characters are the beating heart of a sitcom - but thirty minutes of the characters simply talking would be difficult to sustain.

Therefore, involving, satisfying stories are essential to a successful sitcom - though precisely what approach your script takes to storytelling is a matter for you.

Essentially: whilst your characters are the element your audience falls in love with, your stories are what keep them hooked.

Of course, you are writing comedy, not drama...
