The Daily Telegraph reports that Spelthorne borough council has voted to change the name of the town to Staines-on-Thames in a bid to boost its image by focusing on its "Thamesness" like Richmond and Kingston do. "There's no doubt Ali G put Staines on the map - but for all the wrong reasons," said Alex Tribeck, chairman of Spelthorne Business Forum, which initiated the name change. "He put the stain in Staines."
