Trying is to become the first British series on computer giant Apple's new streaming platform.

Previously rumoured under its working title Alabama, the comedy stars Rafe Spall, Esther Smith and Imelda Staunton.

Spall and Smith play young couple Jason and Nikki, who are desperate to get pregnant.

Eight half-hour episodes of the "heartfelt, hilarious British comedy" have been produced by BBC Studios and will be published globally on Friday 1st May 2020, the company has announced.

They tease: "All Jason and Nikki want is a baby. But it's the one thing they just can't have. Trying is a new comedy series about growing up, settling down and finding someone to love."

Written by Andy Wolton - who has a long string of predominantly radio credits such as The News Quiz and Dilemma - Trying also features Imelda Staunton.

Other rumoured stars, as yet unconfirmed by either the BBC or Apple, include Darren Boyd and Phil Davis.

Jim O'Hanlon - Inside No. 9, A Touch Of Cloth, Catastrophe - directs. The series was produced in 2019, one of the final projects of Chris Sussman as head of BBC Studios comedy before he left for Netflix at the end of the year.

New streaming platform Apple TV+ launched earlier in the Winter, and is currently priced at £4.99 per month. Find out more
