Bugle Boys

Before The Spice Girls, before The Supremes there was The Andrews Sisters. During the late 1930's and 1940's the original girl group were a global sensation, their records sold in the millions and their music still resonates to this day. Frocked up to the nines in faux military costumes, Bugle Boys dance their shapely legs off and sing (not lip-synch) some of Patty, Maxene and LaVerne's most beloved songs including Pistol Packin' Mama, Rum And Coca Cola, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and more. Between numbers they bitch and squabble and deliver a hilarious tale of their life and career in this comedy/cabaret homage.

Coming to Assembly this Summer are The Bugle Boys - a musical romp celebrating the original girl group - The Andrews Sisters. During the 1930s and 1940s the three girls were a global sensation, their records selling in the millions and they are well known to the YouTube generation today.

The American super-group performed close harmonies and big band hits that have been influential and remained timeless, think Bette Midler, Christina Aguilera and all group acapella ever.

This show sees the Bugle Boys performing some of Patty, Maxene and Laverne's most beloved songs, Rum And Coca Cola, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and many more. Catch a glimpse of the girls' life - reimagined - as the musical superstars relax between songs - there simply must have been diva drama behind the scenes? Touring the world, being a mega super trouper superstar whilst pinning your hair up in Victory Rolls must have lead to the odd drama or two!

Bugle Boys is a drag show - not unlike Kinsey Sicks or the Drag Sound Of Music - for all audiences. Not a lip sync in sight, frocking up for the show will be Tom Harlow as Laverne, Martin MacLennan as Patty and Ewan James Armstrong as Maxine, with pianist Chris Gorman as himself.

Conceived and written by John Livings (At Last - The Etta James Story, Let's Get It On - The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye), with Barry Church-Woods as director, Bugle Boys has already stormed the Melbourne Comedy Festival is ready to sing for its supper at the UK premiere at Assembly Festival 2018.

"A high - energy production jam - packed with a dozen standards" - Theatre People

"The Andrews Sisters have a lot to answer for. Since the 1940's when they were at the height of their fame they have spawned hundreds of copy-cat look-alike acts, but perhaps none more outrageous than the drag trio, The Bugle Boys." - Arts Review

Ewan James Armstrong as Maxene

Ewan is an actor and singer, originally from the Outer Hebrides and has worked within theatre, television and music for over 15 years with recent television credits including The X Factor, Geordie Shore and forthcoming ITV series Britain's Scariest Ghosts. Preferring Vaudeville and vintage Drag and Cabaret, over its more modern counterparts, you are more likely find him in a speakeasy drinking cocktails insulting your grandmother than sashaying down the runway! Recently described as the "Joan Crawford of the Edinburgh drag scene", keep him away from the wire hangers!

Tom Harlow as Laverne

Tom is an international and award winning performer based in Glasgow. He originally trained opera and classical singing style but later went in to gain qualifications and professional experience in Musical Theatre, Dance and Physical Theatre. For the past 7 and a half years he has been touring the globe as a male burlesque performer, cabaret singer and MC delighting and bewildering audiences wherever he goes. Tom was crowned Amsterdam King of Boylesque in 2016 and for the past 2 years has been voted as one of the Top 20 Burlesque performers in the UK. Tom also has a fulltime residency in Glasgow at The Riding Room where he has been singing twice a week for the past 6 years. He has performed as far as Bangkok, Paris, Berlin and London and performed for royalty, celebrities and your dad too. Tom is best known for his classic stripteases but also his unique vocal blend of show-tunes & FILTH!

Martin MacLennan as Patty

Martin has been a regular performer at the Fringe for years. Along side various plays, musicals and Monkey Shows, he also helped bring cult hits Vampire Hospital Waiting Room and Ghost Cop to Edinburgh. The Bugle Boys is Martin's second show with Civil Disobedience after his appearance in Roddy Bottum's Sasquatch The Opera at Summer Hall last year. He is based in Leith.
