Stoph Demetriou: Edinburgh Fringe 2017 interview

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is when a person fails to adequately assess their level of competence -- or specifically, their incompetence -- at a task and thus consider themselves much more competent than everyone else. Stoph plans to struggle against his own uselessness to educate the audience on why some people are too useless to realise how useless they are.

Interview

Three questions with solo show Fringe debuter Stoph Demetriou.

Explain The Dunning-Kruger Effect for us plebs.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is when people who are the least competent are the most confident in themselves, because low-ability people don't have the skills to realise that they're actually inept. Or to put it more simply, for the plebs, some people are far too stupid to realise how stupid they are.

The most heart-breaking part is that these people are not only ignorant of their own ignorance, but that they also don't know what the words "know" and "expert" mean, and that they have no respect for people who know more than they do (I hope all that makes sense, I just pulled it from random websites - I don't really understand it myself). If you want to see some good examples of the effect, have a look at any flat earth discussion group on Facebook, or read the comments section of a political article... or just look at Trump.

You get nude a lot in show, any concerns about the cold Edinburgh weather?

I don't just get nude in shows; I get nude for all sorts of reasons. Over the course of a month I might be nude around... four or five times. So nudity is no concern. I'm just generally not looking forward to the cold weather. Honestly coming back home to London feels like sitting on a beach in Cyprus in comparison! To promote a show one year I laid on the floor of the Royal Mile dressed as the corpse of Hitler - I could never be as cold and miserable as that.

Oh, hang on; this is some kind of penile reference, isn't it. No, I have no concerns about the cold on that front - anything to get a laugh really.
